Any new experience you undertake will be challenging. I was only 15 when I first studied aboard and I had never been more than a couple hours away from my house, let alone another country! However your thirst for knowledge will undoubtedly outweigh any fears or anxieties you have. It’s always important to try new things. Even if they don’t go so well, you’ll learn a lot and become a much better person. I would advise that you become as familiar as possible with your host country so that leaving your home won’t be as scary or strange. It is also important to maintain contact with your family and friends, as you’ve probably never been without them for a long period of time. Take items that remind you of home and provide you comfort. Most of all don’t be afraid to try new things!

There is really nothing to be afraid of. Studying abroad is a great opportunity to get out of the small Hawaii “bubble” and out into the rest of the world. Although we learn about other regions of the world while we are in school, it becomes a reality when actually traveling to these places and feeling the history within them. It also made me more aware of many issues and news around the world that I have been rather blind to when living in Hawaii. Studying abroad made me realize how vast the world was while also reaching into myself and learning more about me.
